Introduction

This is the unofficial page of the Malaysia International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) Training Program.

IMO 2014 will be held in Cape Town, South Africa on 3-13 July 2014. Refer to the official site for more details:

http://www.imo2014.org.za/

Six students will be selected to represent Malaysia in the competition. The students will undergo selection tests and training camps throughout the year.

The Malaysian team preparations for IMO 2014 has already started. The program is organized by PERSAMA under the patronage of the Ministry of Education, Malaysia, made possible by generous corporate sponsorship from ExxonMobil Malaysia. As in previous years, Pusat PERMATApintar Negara, UKM are co-organizing and hosting some of the training camps.

About the IMO

The IMO is the World Championship Mathematics Competition for High School students and is held annually in a different country. The first IMO was held in 1959 in Romania, with 7 countries participating. It has gradually expanded to over 100 countries from 5 continents. The IMO Advisory Board ensures that the competition takes place each year and that each host country observes the regulations and traditions of the IMO.

A total of 30 invited students attended the seminar, held at Kolej Cemara, UiTM.

(We apologize to those who did not receive the notification on time. In any case, invited students who did not attend the seminar are still eligible to attend the December camp.)

The seminar started at 10.00am. Dr. Arsmah welcomed the attendees and gave a briefing on IMO and the training program. The students were then divided into groups for a problem-solving workshop, each group led by experienced students from the IMO 2010 camp. We finished at 4.00pm.

The textbooks for reading assignment have been distributed to the students. Please contact Dr. Arsmah at 012 2107620 if you have not received your copy.

The camp was held in Kolej Cemara UiTM. There were 33 attendees, 8 of them returning from the IMO 2010 program. In the first session, the students were warmly welcomed by the IMO committee chair, Dr. Arsmah. Pn. Jamilah and Pn. Masita (UiTM) ably managed the logistics, and they deserve our appreciation.

Throughout the camp, the new students were given lectures on basic concepts by trainers Dr. Shaharudin and Mr. Ikhwan. The returning students focused more on problem solving skills under the guidance of Mr. Suhaimi. Mr. Suhaimi also presented a special lecture on the geometric problems of antiquity.

On the fourth day, we were honored to host a former IMO participant, Dr. Ong Shien Jin. Dr. Ong received his undergraduate degree from MIT and his doctorate from Harvard, and is now working at a top investment bank in New York. He gave an expository talk on computer science, focusing on primality tests. The Q&A session was quite lively as Dr. Ong shared his views with the students on a wide range of topics, from college education, the value of mathematics, to career potential for math students. After his talk, he sat for group photos and presented a gift to the IMO team.

Dr. Ong represented Malaysia in IMO 1999 and 2000, and served as the team guide in IMO 2001 in Washington DC, while a freshman at MIT. He is the first Malaysian medalist at IMO.

The students are selected from among the winners of OMK 2009 and other mathematics competitions held throughout the year. The shortlisting are done strictly by merit, according to rigorous criteria to ensure only the best students  get to attend the grueling training camp.

18 — 22 December 2009: IMO Training Camp I

Venue: Fakulti Sains Komputer dan Matematik, UiTM Shah Alam.

The students were divided into two classes: Senior and Junior. The Senior class consists of students who showed exceptional promise in the IMO 2009 camp, and were called back for another shot at the IMO team. There were eight students in the Senior class. Everyone else attended the Junior class.

The students arrived on the afternoon of Friday, 18 December and registered at Kolej Cendana UiTM. The first session was held that evening, a welcoming ceremony featuring speeches by Dr. Daud, Mr. Suhaimi and the IMO Committee Chair, Dr. Arsmah. The students were warmly welcomed, and reminded to work hard during the camp.

The lectures for the Senior class were given by Mr. Suhaimi. The lectures for the Junior class were given by Dr Daud, Dr. Jamaludin, Dr. Shaharudin and Mr. Ikhwan. The students went through four hours of lecture in the morning, and two hours of daily test in the afternoon. In the evening, the classes met and the coaches discussed some problems with the students.

Since this is the first camp, the lectures were organized to introduce the students to basic topics as well as basic problem solving techniques.

The texts used in this camp are

  • Problems from the Book by Andreescu & Dospinescu (Senior);
  • Mathematical Circles by Fomin et. al. (Junior);
  • The Art and Craft of Problem Solving by Zeitz (Junior);
  • Challenging Problems in Geometry by Posamentier & Salkind (Junior).

Homework 1 for the Senior class (due 4 January 2010):

  • Problems from the Book, Chapter 3, Problem 12 (p. 69)
  • Problems from the Book, Chapter 10, Problem 12 (p. 228)

Dr. Arsmah, the chairperson of the IMO Committee, were present during the camp. She motivated the students to use this golden opportunity to learn as much as possible about mathematical problem solving. Mrs. Masita and Mrs. Jamilah from UiTM arranged for the logistics, and their efforts to run the camp smoothly should be given due credit.

Students departed on the afternoon of Monday, 25 January.

  3. Dark says:

    Is the list for the 40 shortlisted students available? When will the school be notified?

    • suhaimiramly says:

      I’ve updated the list (there are 41 of them). PERSAMA already informed the Ministry about the successful candidates.

      The Ministry will then notify the Jabatan, which will in turn inform the schools, which will inform the students. Hopefully everyone will be notified by early next week.

      Or, the quickest alternative is to check this page for updates.

  4. justme says:

    how is it possible to check if i was in one of the 102 students who were invited but the school did not inform me? is there any way? i would really really like to join the imo training camp and i believe i have the credentials to do so.

  12. Kang Chia Ui says:

    Will those attended the training be given a cert as recognisation?

  13. wei zhe says:

    mr.suhaimi, has the information about the camp in dec been sent out? the dates are just around the corner bt i havent heard any news about it yet

  14. suhaimiramly says:

    Those who attended the seminar has been notified about the next camp on 17-21 December. Those who did not attend (5 of them) has been informed individually.

    Students should attend the training camp with intention to learn mathematics and not just to collect certificates. But in any case, yes, certificates will be provided.
