On Wealth

26 August 2009

Last week there was an interesting discussion taking place in a mailing list that I am a member of. The mailing list is made up of a group of young entrepreneurs based in KL. The discussion started when one of the members received an offer to write a weekly column in a major daily newspaper. He’s supposed to write about business and entrepreneurship. So he wrote an email to the group asking for ideas. The following is a condensed version of that discussion.

(The discussion is in Bahasa Melayu. I use pseudonyms because I haven’t received permission from the authors to reproduce their emails here).

Jebat:

Salam kengkawan,

aku dpt tulis satu kolum kat paper utusan tentang usahawan .. keh keh keh..

bleh tak bagi idea.. apa yg perlu aku tulis.. dan mana nak dpt panduan tajuk..

thanks

Kasturi:

Wah wah wah.. sakan.. dah ade column sendiri ni.. tahniah!

Tapi jgn general sgt.. Aku suka yg specific sket.. contohnya: scenario usahwan melayu, berniaga dgn halal, how to get bantuan kewangan di malaysia, cadangan buku2 bisnes yg bagus, etc

Lekiu:

After all .. ilmu dan pengalaman tu real competitive edge …

Jebat:

Aku rasa better explain kenapa perlu orang melayu mengejar kekayaan .. he he he.

duit = dosa

mudah kita nak sebut “celaka orang kaya tu” tapi susah nak sebut “celaka orang miskin”

tapi realitinya.. jenayah mostly berlaku dikalangan orang miskin.. jangan kata jenayah.. sumbang mahram paling banyak dikalangan orang miskin..

terima kasih

Alauddin:

> 1) duit = dosa

lebih banyak duit, lebih banyak dosa.

bab ni kau boleh refer to buku “The Secrets of The Millionaire Mind” by T. Harve Eker. Tapi hati2 la. Dia org takde iman, kita org ada iman. Maksud hidup kita berbeza.

Nabi S.A.W seorang yg zuhud. Zuhud = Simplicity. Org yg simple, dia hanya beli/pakai mengikut tahap keperluan sahaja.

Misalnya, baju Nabi S.A.W tak banyak. Yg warna merah dipakai waktu terima tetamu. Baju yg mahal pernah dibeli, tapi bukan selalu. Jarang sangat la. Pedang of course la kene berkualiti sebab peperangan is very rough. Tapi bukan utk menunjuk-nunjuk yg Nabi S.A.W. seorang yg kaya.

Simplicity and objective oriented is related to lifestyle. Apatah lagi kalau berlebih-lebihan.

Yg penting, keperluan kau berbeza dengan keperluan aku. Kalau kau rasa perlu pada BMW and boleh justify pada Allah kat akhirat nanti kenapa kau perlu BMW, then go ahead. Aku cuma perlu bersangka baik yg kau pakai BMW bukan pasal cinta dunia. You have your own solid reason. Warren Buffet dan TS Syed Mokhtar tak perlu pada Mercedez or BMW.

Pepahal pun, dengan tahap iman kita orang awam ni, cara hidup (lifestyle) sederhana adalah yg terbaik. Again, it’s about lifestyle. Lifestyle kita dibentuk dgn iman, ilmu dan amal. Bukan berkaitan dgn jumlah wang yg kita ada dalam bank or bawah bantal. Org kaya yg iman lemah or takde iman tak ragut handbag pompuan, tapi diorang songlap duit government (contoh je). Itu jenayah diorang.

Aku bukanla pandai. Banyak lagi dalil2 yg aku boleh share tapi kene jumpa la. Not through email. Wallahua’lam.

Jebat:

Salam,

good discussion..

thanks A, bagus explaination ko.

mentaliti mcm nie kena ubah dlm masyarakat kita.

terima kasih

Alauddin:

Eh, yg J terang tu mmg selari dgn apa yg aku (aku baru nak start, bukan ustaz) terang la.

Contohnya hadis yg menceritakan satu ketika Nabi S.A.W berdoa pada Allah mengadu ttg kemiskinannya. Allah hantar malaikat bawak satu dulang berisi penuh dgn kunci2 pintu khazanah Allah kat dunia ni. Tapi Nabi S.A.W tolak. (Banyak lagi weii, nanti pjg giler email ni). Tapi itu iman Nabi S.A.W la.

Because of that, Abdul Rahman became a more objective oriented person supaya bila kene hisab nanti dia ada solid answers to justify.

And yes, lifestyle dia tak la macam anak raja walaupun dia kaya raya. Allah suruh kita berniaga, mempelajari kemahiran utk majukan bisnes and He decide who will be rich and who will be poor. That is why we have to be objective oriented supaya mudah-mudahan lepas hisab kat akhirat nanti, no matter kita kaya or miskin.

Contrary to Abdul Rahman Auf, Abu Zar Ghifari r.a mmg sangat la zuhud. Definisi zuhud/simplicity bagi Abu Zar sgt extreme berbanding dgn kita punye definisi ttg zuhud. Sederhana bagi Abu Zar, dah macam miskin papa kedana bagi kita. Tapi iman dia tahap lain. Sebab tu Nabi.

Tapi ada org cakap kat Umar r.a…org Islam dah kaya sebab dapat conquer banyak negara, so buat apa nak berniaga?

Kita jadi dependent on others kalau tak berniaga, macam kita dok depend kat Cina2 kat m’sia ni.

So J, aku rasa better kau highlight ttg pentingnya faham akan tujuan berniaga instead of tekankan sgt ttg pentingnya jadi kaya berbanding miskin. Takut nanti disebabkan statement kau kat akhbar nanti, ramai yg bisnes gila2 tapi solat and zakat cam hampeh.

Wallahua’lam.

Lekiu:

Oit mane nak dapat kitab ni ?
> Fadhilat Tijarah karangan Sheikh Zakaria rah. pula, ada satu bab “Akibat Buruk Yang Menimpa Umat Islam Jika Tidak Melibatkan Diri Dalam Perniagaan”.

Btw .. ade org bagitau aku ..

Aku setuju kalau tulis tentang perbincangan mengenai tujuan berniaga.

“Kemiskinan menghampiri kekufuran”
“9/10 pintu rezeki ialah bisnes”
“Nabi pon berniaga mengembala kambing”

Contohnyer .. orang2 kaya sepatutnya berperanan sebagai re-distributor of wealth macam AlBukhary. Salah satu sebab Warren Buffet berderma pon sebab dia percaya fungsi org kaya ialah untuk menjadi re-distributor of wealth for the good of others.

Yayasan AlBukhary tu tak silap aku kos RM300 juta.

Kadang2 aku fikir … orang2 kaya ni jadi kaya sebab kerja kuat/pandai atau pun Allah pilih dia jadi kaya sebab objektif hidup dia sememangnya memerlukan duit yang banyak untuk dicapai. (buat Yayasan kebajikan contohnyer).

Uish panjang lagi kalao nak cerita ni …. nanti bebiler shisha kita bincang lagi laaa kakakakakaka …

Salam,

Creepypasta

24 August 2009

Some good creepypasta to keep you awake at night.

(All stories are taken from that Encyclopedia Dramatica entry, and I assume most originated from 4chan /x/ board):

————————————————————–

In many stores and establishments that provide videos of a less than savory manner, a business card is kept. Some stores keep it well hidden, locked in a safe, and will deny its existence. Others will show you if you ask for it by name. None will have it displayed in the open.

On this card is a name, “Moonlight Films”, and a contact number. It is always a local number. Go to any payphone in your city and dial the number. The answer will be prompt but all you will hear is silence. Wait thirty seconds. Then you will be served.

A dry, monotone male voice will ask you a question: “Is the road from life to death dark?” The correct response is: “It is moonlit.”

If you answer with anything but the correct reply, he will hang up on you. If you fail the first time, I’d suggest not trying again. But if the question is answered properly, the man will say one address in your city and then hang up.

Go to this address and you will find that it is a small, dingy apartment. The carpet will be dirty, the wallpaper flaking and wrinkled, the windows cracked. It will smell of tobacco smoke and decay. On the stained old coffee table there will be a paper bag. On this bag your full name will be written in red sharpie.

Open the bag and you will find an unlabeled video tape. Take it and place exactly $10.99 in the bag then leave.

You can watch the tape if you like, but you don’t have to. I warn you: it’s not pleasant. You will see a room or chamber papered in dessicated skin, the furniture will be crafted from flesh and bone. The tape will last approximately 32 minutes and will depict the murder of a person and the subsequent crafting of their body into furnishing – lampshades made of skin, tables made of bone.

After renting the tape for one week, you must return it to the apartment by sliding it through the mail slot when the time is up. After that, never return to the apartment and definitely don’t call the number ever again.

I’d also suggest you not keep the tape more than a week. The owners will not be satisfied with a mere late fee – and you know, a good home can never have enough accessories.

————————————————————–

One school day, a boy named Tom was sitting in class and doing math. It was six more minutes until after school. As he was doing his homework, something caught his eye.

His desk was next to the window, and he turned and looked to the grass outside. It looked like a picture. When school was over, he ran to the spot where he saw it. He ran fast so that no one else could grab it.

He picked it up and smiled. It had a picture of the most beautiful girl he had ever seen. She had a dress with tights on and red shoes, and her hand was formed into a peace sign.

She was so beautiful he wanted to meet her, so he ran all over the school and asked everyone if they knew her or have ever seen her before. But everyone he asked said “no.” He was devastated.

When he was home, he asked his older sister if she knew the girl, but unfortunately she also said “no.” It was very late, so Tom walked up the stairs, placed the picture on his bedside table and went to sleep.

In the middle of the night Tom was awakened by a tap on his window. It was like a nail tapping. He got scared. After the tapping he heard a giggle. He saw a shadow near his window, so he got out of his bed, walked toward his window, opened it up and followed the giggling. By the time he reached it, it was gone.

The next day again he asked his neighbors if they knew her. Everybody said, “Sorry, no.” When his mother came home he even asked her if she knew her. She said “no.” He went to his room, placed the picture on his desk and fell asleep.

Once again he was awakened by a tapping. He took the picture and followed the giggling. He walked across the road, when suddenly he got hit by a car. He was dead with the picture in his hand.

The driver got out of the car and tried to help him, but it was too late. Suddenly he saw the picture and picked it up.

He saw a cute girl holding up three fingers.

————————————————————–

I live in the U.K. A colleague at work heard this from her boyfriend.

He works with someone who said that his sister’s friend got the last tube (subway train) home a couple of weeks ago. When she got on there were five rows of seats empty but the last row had three people sitting in them. As she was a little afraid, she went and sat opposite these people. She settled down and looked up to see the woman sitting opposite her really staring at her.

So she got out her book and started to read but every time she looked up the woman was still staring. The train pulled into the next station and a man got on. He looked up and down the carriage, took a look at her and the people opposite her and came and sat next to her. As the train left the station the man leaned back and said quietly in her ear “If you know what’s good for you, you’ll get off at the next station with me”. She was scared but thought the best idea would be to get off at the next station as he asked as there might be people around.

The next stop comes up and she leaves the train with this man. The man says “Thank God, I didn’t mean to scare you but I had to get you off that train. I’m a doctor and the woman sitting opposite you was dead, and the two men either side were propping her up.” According to the guy who told this story, the girl and the doctor called the police who stopped the train at the next station.

————————————————————–

During the summer of 1983, in a quiet town near Minneapolis, Minnesota, the charred body of a woman was found inside the kitchen stove of a small farmhouse. A video camera was also found in the kitchen, standing on a tripod and pointing at the oven. No tape was found inside the camera at the time.

Although the scene was originally labeled as a homicide by police, an unmarked VHS tape was later discovered at the bottom of the farm’s well (which had apparently dried up earlier that year).

Despite its worn condition, and the fact that it contained no audio, police were still able to view the contents of the tape. It depicted a woman recording herself in front of a video camera (seemingly using the same camera the police found in the kitchen). After positioning the camera to include both her and her kitchen stove in the image, the tape then showed her turning on the oven, opening the door, crawling inside, and then closing the door behind her. Eight minutes into the video, the oven could be seen shaking violently, after which point thick black smoke could be seen emanating from it. For the remaining 45 minutes of video, until the batteries in the camera died, it remained in its stationary position.

To avoid disturbing the local community, police never released any information about the tape, or even the fact that it was found. Police were also not able to determine who put the tape in the well, or why the height and stature of the woman in the video didn’t come close to matching the body they’d found in the oven.

————————————————————–

A young girl is left home alone with only her dog to protect her. When night approaches, she locks all the doors and tries to lock all the windows but one won’t close.

She decides to leave it unlocked and goes to bed. Her dog takes its customary place under her bed.

In the deep of night she awakens to a dripping sound coming from the bathroom. The girl is too scared to go check so she reaches her hand under the bed. She feels a reassuring lick from her dog and falls back to sleep. She reawakens to the dripping sound, reaches her hand down to the dog where she feels the reassuring lick and falls back to sleep. Once more she awakens to the dripping sound. She reaches her hand down and feels the lick of her dog.

Now curious about the dripping sound, she gets up and slowly walks towards the bathroom, the dripping sound getting louder as she approaches. She reaches the bathroom and turns on the light. She is greeted by a horrific sight; hanging from the shower nozzle is her dog with its throat slit open and its blood dripping into the bathtub.

Something on the bathroom mirror catches her eye she turns around. Written on the bathroom mirror in her dog’s blood are the words “HUMANS CAN LICK TOO”.

one of the best guitar album of all time

one of the best guitar albums of all time

I am going to start updating again so do come in more frequently…heh

In short, interesting things that happened since the last update:

1. Went to Bremen, Germany for two weeks to attend the 2009 International Mathematical Olympiad. This is my first time attending the IMO as a Jury member.

The trip was ok — the highlight is a visit to a concentration camp in Hamburg.

2. Went to Brunei and was invited to address the officers at the Brunei Ministry of Education. Many thanks to my gracious host Dr. Saiful from Universiti Brunei Darussalam for making my brief stay very enjoyable.

3. Book sales went very well; currently it is on sale in Indonesia (thanks Fazdlee and Pak Polmas Sihombong). Currently working on Volumes 2 to 4. Hope to get it all finished and edited before Raya.

4. Berita Minggu profile on Bal:

http://www.bharian.com.my/Current_News/BH/Sunday/Personaliti/20090816095412/Article/indexdes_html

This appeared last weekend. Since I do not subscribe to Berita — my family read Utusan and I read only online news — I only learned about this later in the evening. Thanks to all who sent in wishes, and also to Abg Azis for the glowing profile.

5. New project kickoff for JAS Technologies — a “part-time” outfit I founded with Jalil and Akmal (hence JAS, which sounds lot better than JAB). I will update soon once I get greenlight from Akmal.

Other than that, nothing much happened. Iznan just got back from his annual Islamic missionary trip to Penang and Fazdlee went for a vacation in July so the office was pretty much dormant in much of July and August. Now that everyone is back, we can’t wait to get busy again and I am very excited!
