The Speaker,

Shafiq Morton is a well-known South African photo-journalist with thirty years experience. He was one of the pioneering forces behind the creation of Voice of the Cape Muslim radio station, where he is currently a presenter of the late afternoon DriveTime Show. He is the author of “Notebooks from Makkah and Madinah” – a devotional travelogue. He is now completing his second book, “Surfing Behind the Wall, My South African-Palestine Stories”. In 2008 he was awarded the National Vodacom Journalist of the Year Award in the Community Media category. He is one of the 11 South Africans voted amongst the 500 most influential Muslims in the world by the Royal Islamic Strategies Centre 2009 and 2010. He was awarded the Distinguished Contributor to Islam and Peace Award from the Intercultural Peace Centre of Ireland 2010. He has recently won the regional Vodacom Journalist of the Year Award in the Community category 2010. Shafiq also writes op-eds for the Independent Newspaper group in South Africa on a variety of topics.
